The Foundation’s maternal care outreach works with women through pregnancy and the earliest months of a child’s life, and it goes to them rather than waiting for them to come to it.
Newborn essentials are part of that. A mother leaving hospital, or giving birth at home, needs specific and unglamorous things straight away: clothing, wraps, basic hygiene items, and help with feeding. They cost little beside what their absence causes, and they are precisely what a household under pressure goes without.

The education matters as much as the supplies. A first-time mother with nobody to ask is making decisions about feeding, hygiene and warning signs alone. Time spent answering her questions costs the Foundation very little and changes what happens in the weeks that follow.
Reaching women where they are is the other half of it. An antenatal appointment that requires a journey and a day’s lost income is an appointment that gets missed, and the missing is rarely a matter of not caring. Taking care to the community removes the choice between attending and earning.
Many of the women reached this way are raising children on their own. Where that is the case, the outreach connects them to Single Parents Support, which is concerned with skills, income and stability rather than one-off relief — because a package of newborn essentials solves a fortnight, not a year.
