Achebe Hope Foundation offers internships to students and early-career professionals who want practical experience in the nonprofit and development sector.
An internship here is not an office chair and a folder of reading. The Foundation runs outreaches, programmes and a digital academy, and interns are put on that work rather than beside it. It cuts both ways: you are given real responsibility, and what you produce is used.
Departments that host interns
Monitoring and evaluation is the department most people overlook and the one most worth understanding. It is where a programme is measured against what it promised, and it is the difference between a foundation that reports and one that only announces.
What to expect
Interns work alongside the team on live projects rather than observing from the side. Placements are agreed individually around your availability and what you want to learn.
In practice that means being handed a piece of work with a deadline and someone to ask when you are stuck. A communications intern writes copy that gets published. A media intern shoots and edits footage that is used. A programmes intern helps plan an outreach and is there on the day. A digital education intern works on AADA course material and supports learners on Achebe Campus.
Terms are agreed in writing before you start — duration, hours, where you will be based, who supervises you and what you will be working on. Both offices host interns: Dokart Corporate House, Old Onitsha–Awka Road, Ogidi, Anambra State, and No. 8B Thaba Tseka Street, Wuse 2, Abuja. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (WAT).
What we ask
All interns agree to our Volunteer Policy, and to our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policies where a placement involves contact with children.
Beyond that, we ask for the ordinary things: turn up when you said you would, ask when you do not know, and treat the people our programmes serve with the same respect you would want. Confidentiality matters here more than in most first jobs, because a good deal of what you see concerns children and families.
Applying
Tell us which department interests you, what you are studying or have just finished, when you are available and what you hope to get out of a placement. If your interest does not match one of the departments above, say what it is anyway — we would rather know.
If a placement is not the right fit at the moment, volunteering is open year-round and often leads to the same work.
